  • Re:B2 to J1 conversion and other J1 subclass problem

I have done my M.D., (equivalent) in India. I am interested in doing residency here in US. But till that time I am planning to get a J1 ( any subclass) such that there will be smooth transition to J1 allied physician visa or H1b when I join residency.

    1) Is there any 12 month restriction period for getting ECFMG sponsored J1 Physician visa if I was in J1 students exchange visitor visa(in the preceding 12 months) and apply for Ecfmg sponsored J1 physician from my home country?
    2) If so, Is this restriction of 12 month applicable also to J1 short term visiting scholar, J1 internship and J1 trainee visa?
    3) Will ECFMG sponsored J1 physician visa validity( period I can stay in that visa) be reduced based on the years i spent in J1 students exchange visa? If there is deduction, Is the same reduction in years applicable also to J1 short term visiting scholar, J1 internship and J1 trainee visa?
    4) will there be any problems if I could get a H1b for doing my residency other than getting a waiver?

It would be very helpful for me if you could guide me on this as these facts are important in selscting my career path. Thank you.

    Prabhu
