  • Doubt on H4 to J1

Hi, I need some help in the following matter.

My wife is a qualified teacher and holds H4 visa. An employer is willing to employ her. I was just wondering whether she could apply for J1 visa while residing in the US and if approved, start working. Or does she need to go to India to get the visa stamped.

Is there a provision for an H4 visa holder to change over to J1 to work in a public school?

Please enlighten me on the issues of converting from H4 to J1.

Read more about what a J1 visa is granted for. From what you mention here, it doesn't look like J1 visa is the way to go.

J1 is for researchers, exchange students and not for something like what you have mentioned here.

Do more research. Teaching in public schools can possibly sponsor a H1b visa.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.

      Thank you txh1b

      I appreciate your input.

I had a second thought on J1, that's why the posting.

In fact, I came from India on J1 on a teacher exchange program and now I am on H1B working in a public school, with I-140 approved.

And my school business manager told me to work on the possibility of J1 for my wife, since the school had sponsored my J1 through a foundation. This would speed up or save time on H1B processing.

Let me know if you have any further input on this matter.
