i recently arrived in US on a J1 visa. i am a short term scholar in northeastern university boston till july. i want to continue my further phd prog here. can u pls tell me how i can convert my j1 visa to a f1 status. do i need to go back to india after my j1 expires and re apply for a new f1? looking forward for possible help.

You should talk to the ISO/DSO in school to evaluate the options for converting from J1 to F1. There might be a special need for J1 but can do a COS inside US without having to go back to home country. ISO should be able to explain the details.
