Two contacts for J-1 visa verification..I am confused..

Hello there, when I was filling my J-1 visa application, I got an option of providing names of two people (not family members or other relatives) who can be contacted to verify my information.

My question is, do they really contact such people if we provide some names? Why I am asking is because we have a very big family that mainly consists of relatives and family members. I am not sure if I gave two family friends names they will know everything about me. I am also afraid what if they provided false info even when knowing the true one...I really don't know what to do?

No nobody checks basically its just a formilization by the government so that you will be safe if you run into trouble. Hence seeing you have two contacts and you at least know someone in that country Its like refrences my boyfriend put me down last year.
