During visitor visa processing? Does your passport get kept?

I've used it, it took 2 weeks with priority service. I was told you can only get your passport back by cancelling the application and losing the money you paid for it (and you'd need to apply for the visa again if you need it). I was in a similar situation omeglz or online2yu and had no choice but buy a new flight ticket after I got my passport back

It takes from 3 to 5 weeks for a US visa application to get processed. After the processing, the applicant can get a positive reply on their application, and the consulate will deliver the document. The delivery of the visa can take up to two other workdays.
