Congratulations on your new position in the US on a J-1 Visa! Regarding your freelance work for a US-based company, it's important to ensure compliance with the regulations and restrictions associated with your visa. The J-1 Visa is primarily intended for individuals participating in exchange programs and may come with specific limitations on employment.

To determine whether you can continue your freelance work, I would recommend consulting with an immigration attorney or an authorized representative familiar with J-1 Visa regulations. They will be able to provide you with accurate and up-to-date information regarding your specific situation, including any restrictions or permissions related to freelance work.

Remember that maintaining compliance with visa requirements is essential to avoid any potential issues or violations that could negatively impact your immigration status. Seeking professional advice will help

I am not an expert of this, but I can provide a response based on the information you have provided.

Regarding your situation, it is important to consider the regulations and restrictions associated with your J-1 visa. J-1 visas are typically issued for specific exchange visitor programs, and the conditions and limitations of your visa may affect your ability to engage in freelance work.

To ensure compliance with your visa status, it is recommended to consult with an immigration attorney or the designated program sponsor who facilitated your J-1 visa. They will have the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding the specific terms of your visa and any potential restrictions on freelance work.

Additionally, filling out the W-8BEN form for your freelance work indicates your status as a foreign individual receiving income from a U.S.-based company. However, it is essential to review the tax regulations and requirements of both your home country and the United States to ensure that you are fulfilling your tax obligations properly.

To summarize, seeking advice from an immigration attorney or your program sponsor and consulting with a tax professional familiar with cross-border income matters will provide you with the most accurate guidance for your specific situation.
