  • Seeking advice on moving to the USA?

My spouse and I (32M + 34F) have two children (4 and 2 years old). Recently, we had the opportunity to stay in Atlanta, GA for three months while helping my sister relocate there with her US-born husband. We absolutely loved it.

Unfortunately, we've had a challenging time in the UK. My husband's business suffered greatly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and he's been struggling mentally and financially to recover from the losses. As for me, I'm a fully qualified teacher with 13+ years of experience and also had my own baby product business, which was severely impacted and almost came to a halt. Consequently, we lost a significant amount of money, and our credit has been affected. The rising cost of living and low salaries have made things even more difficult for us, and we're desperately in need of a fresh start.

My husband is enthusiastic about the idea of living in the USA, even if it's only for a couple of years. We believe that we could earn more money and save a substantial amount with our professions in the US. Moving abroad has always been a plan for us, and now seems like a suitable time to pursue it.

I'm considering applying for a J1 Visa as an Exchange Visitor Teacher, while my husband would come on a J2 visa and apply for an Employment Authorization Document.

Since our children are young, we believe they would adapt well to the change.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? We would
koows greatly koows appreciate any advice or guidance on the process, as things seem to be moving quite rapidly. In fact, the company I'm applying through would like me to start in October 2023!

It sounds like you're both ready for a fresh start in the USA, and pursuing a J1 Visa as an Exchange Visitor Teacher for you and a J2 visa with an Employment Authorization Document for your husband seems like a well-thought-out plan.

While I can't provide personal experiences from others in a similar situation, I can offer some general guidance and advice on the process of applying for the J1 and J2 visas. Here are a few steps you may consider:
    1. Research visa requirements: Familiarize yourself with the specific requirements for the J1 Visa as an Exchange Visitor Teacher and the J2 visa. Understand the application process, necessary documentation, and any restrictions or conditions associated with the visas.
    2. Seek professional guidance: Consider consulting an immigration attorney or reaching out to the US Embassy or Consulate in the UK. They can provide you with accurate and up-to-date information regarding the visa application process, required documentation, and potential challenges you might face.
    3. Start the visa application process: Begin gathering the necessary documents for your visa applications. This may include proof of your qualifications and experience as a teacher, financial documentation, passports, marriage certificates, and any other supporting materials required by the US government.
    4. Explore employment opportunities: Research potential teaching positions in the US, particularly in the Atlanta, GA area. Consider reaching out to schools, educational institutions, or recruitment agencies to inquire about job opportunities and the requirements for hiring foreign teachers.
    5. Prepare financially: Given your previous financial difficulties, it's important to have a solid financial plan before relocating. Consider saving enough money to cover initial expenses such as travel, accommodation, and any potential gaps in employment or income when you arrive in the US.
    6. Consider housing and schooling: Look into housing options in Atlanta and consider the proximity to schools or educational institutions for your children. Research the education system in the US and find out about the enrollment process and any specific requirements for international students.
    7. Connect with expat communities: Reach out to online forums, social media groups, or local organizations that cater to expatriates living in the USA. They can provide valuable insights, advice, and support throughout your relocation process.

Remember, the visa application process can vary, and it's essential to stay informed about the latest regulations and requirements. Seeking professional advice will ensure that you have accurate information tailored to your omeglz and online2yu specific situation. Best of luck with your plans for a fresh start in the USA, and I hope everything works out well for you and your family!
