  • J1 and J2 visa

Hi... I’m wondering when we enter the USA on a J1 if we are required to stay in the US for a period of time? Do we also need to stay while we wait for the SSN? Do J2 spouses also need to remain in the US for a time period? For reference we are both Canadian.

Hello! As a J1 visa holder entering the USA, there is no mandatory requirement to stay in the country for a specific period. However, it's crucial to abide by the terms and conditions of your J1 program, which may outline certain obligations.

Regarding the Social Security Number (SSN), you do not need to remain in the US solely for the SSN application process. You can apply for an SSN while you are in the country and leave afterward. It's advisable to check the specific SSN application process for J1 visa holders to ensure a smooth procedure.

Similarly, J2 spouses are not obligated to stay in the US for a particular time period, but they are allowed to accompany the J1 visa holder. The J2 visa allows spouses to work in the US with an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) obtained from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Please note that immigration policies and procedures can change, so it's essential to verify the most up-to-date information from official government sources. Also, the link you provided seems to be an IP address, and I'm unable to access it. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

When you enter the USA on a J1 visa, there is no specific requirement that you must stay in the US for a particular period of time. However, as a J1 visa holder, you are expected to fulfill the purpose of your visit, such as participating in an exchange program, conducting research, or engaging in academic activities. It's essential to comply with the terms and conditions of your J1 visa.

Regarding the Social Security Number (SSN), it's not mandatory to wait in the US for the SSN to be issued. You can leave the country and wait for it to be processed while you're abroad. However, if you plan to work in the US, having an SSN is crucial for employment and tax purposes. So, you might want to consider the timing of your departure and work plans accordingly.

For J2 spouses, there is no specific requirement to stay in the US for a particular period of time either. As long as the primary J1 visa holder maintains their status, the J2 visa holder is allowed to stay in the US and can leave and re-enter the country as needed.

Since you both are Canadian citizens, it's essential to ensure you have all the necessary documents, including valid passports, DS-2019 forms, and any supporting documentation, for entry into the US as J1 and J2 visa holders.

If you have any specific concerns or questions about your J1 visa status or requirements, I recommend contacting the
koowspin and echatrandom US embassy or consulate for further clarification.

Safe travels and best of luck with your J1 experience!

Ah, the adventurous world of J1 visas! Remember, there's no specific requirement to stay in the US for a set period, but make sure to fulfill the purpose of your visit. As for the Social Security Number (SSN), you can leave and wait for it to be processed while abroad, but it's crucial for work and taxes if you plan to work in the US. J2 spouses can come and go as long as the primary J1 visa holder maintains their status.

As Canadian citizens, have all necessary documents ready for your J1 and J2 visa adventure. If you have any questions, reach out to the US embassy or consulate.

Entering the USA on a J1 visa doesn't obligate you to stay for a specific period of time. However, you're generally expected to fulfill the purpose of your J1 program, whether it's study, work, or cultural exchange. The duration of your stay can depend on your program's timeline.

Regarding the Social Security Number (SSN), it's not a requirement to stay in the US while waiting for it. You can leave the US and return once you have it, if needed.

J2 spouses don't have specific time requirements either, but they are often tied to the J1 visa holder's program. If the J1 visa holder leaves their program, it could affect the J2 spouse's status as well.

Keep in mind that regulations may evolve, so consulting the official US government
omeglz and online2yu resources or an immigration attorney could provide the most accurate information. Safe travels and best of luck with your J1 experience!
