Hi everybody,
I am a student from France who's already been on two different J1 visa (one as an exchange student with the San Francisco State University in 2009-2010 and another one as a paid intern - sponsored by the AIC - from March 2011 to March 2012).
I am currently in the process of applying to a UCLA summer program but discovered that - in order to get the J1 visa required to attend this program - "at least 51% of [my] expenses must be covered by a sponsoring party other than [my]self or [my] family (i.e. an employer), and that sponsoring party will have to provide a letter indicating that they have agreed to provide you with financial support.
I do not recall such a policy ever being applied to any of the previous two J1 visas I held and am very confused as to what this means and how to make that work for me...
Additionally - in a perfect world - this UCLA summer program would precede a master program in LA (for which I would need a F1 visa), which means I wouldn't go back to France before the master begins, simply directly start the master after this summer program.
Is that AT ALL possible (should I get both the DS-2019 & I-20 in time, I was thinking of maybe applying for the two different visas at the same time... but right now I'm pretty confused regarding the 51% of funding from a sponsoring party...)?
Any help / advice on either of these questions (51% sponsoring party / applying to both J1 & F1 at once & make that work.) would be more than welcome!
Thank you very much!
