I have applied for the J-1 visa couple of days back. It is still pending. They had returned my passport and told me that once it is approved they will let me know. Then I should send my passport by post to the consulate. Meantime I lost my passport. What should I do if my visa is approved? Do I need to apply once again with new passport?

Get a new passport asap.
When they contact you send them the new passport and ask them what they want you to do.
