Completely confused and losing hope. Spouse of American

Hi everyone,
Where do I start. Well I will give a brief description of my current situation and hopefully someone can shed some light on us.

I am a Canadian citizen, my husband and I married in 2005 (he is American).
We have been working on my visa for over 4 years now, which does not seem normal for the visa process.
We hired a immigration lawyer and he has not only delayed us with the whole process, he has yet to do anything more for us other than sending us forms( which we could have gotten ourselves). I am so confused as to where we even stand in the whole process at this point. We were told by our lawyer that we had to start all over because we were caught in the visa change a few years ago. I find this ridiculous. At this very moment I am about to do the DS 260 form and submit it online. I would greatly appreciate any advice or personal experiences as to what I can expect next, and how long it took to receive an interview date.
I will be grateful for any kind of insight as we have a daughter and this has not been easy for any of us. I feel that our family is falling apart and the separation has taken its toll as is.

Thank you.. We did keep track of what he said, but what he was telling us was incorrect. We were told to not do certain forms, and not pay certain fees. Which in turn lead to the constant delays because we were under suppose to do them, and pay the fees. I later found posting online about this lawyer, we were not aware of such scams. Things seem to be moving along as planned now as we have the senators office involved.
