I am a resident alien (Green Card) of the US for 5yrs now, and I a girlfriend (us tourist visa) overseas that I wanted to marry. I just wanted to know what would be the best thing to do. Should I apply for US citizenship now and get married after or marry her first overseas and apply for US citizenship?

I have heard that if a US resident marries a tourist visa or a working visa holder and applies for a US citizenship their husband or wife automatically becomes a US resident or a US Citizen.
