gap between jobs

I currently work for A and my H1B ends on 06/30/2013. I have an offer from B and the starting date is 08/15/2013. Both A and B are in academia. I would like to know if I am out-of-status between 07/01/2013 and 08/14/2013 even B files H1B prior to 06/30/2013. Do I have to go back to my home country to get my visa stamped and then reenter?
