You got 1 Year either because the employer asked only for one year or the employer was able to provide documentation of work for only one year for you.
In either case, you can apply for extension of stay if in US. You can apply upto 6 Months before your I-94 expiry.
Extension request and approval still does not extend the visa date. If visa in passport is expiring in April 2013, and after April 2013 if and when you leave US in order to return to US you will need to go for fresh H1 stamping.
This is my opinion not legal advice.

Shivani,I am also having same issue. Please help me when you get answer for your question
For me VISA got issued on 28-FEB-2013. Currently I am in INDIA not yet traveled to US. The below are my PETITION and VISA validity dates.
PETITION Validity is : 26th Nov 2012 to 25th Nov 2013
VISA Validity is : 28th FEB 2013 to 25th Nov 2015
The above dates in the PETITION and VISA are confusing us and we are having the below queries. Can any one please reply answers for the below queries?
According to the PETITION and VISA validity dates,
1) When I have to apply for extension?
2) How long I can stay in US without extension?
