I9 Admission number - Use old admission number from old I94 when out of country?

All,

I am currently out of US. My employer asked me to fill I9. I don't know why, yet!

I turned in my I94 (that was stapled to my passport when I entered US in September 2011) when leaving US. Can I still use that admission number?

Or should I leave it blank for now? I can enter the expiration date of my work authorization. Will it suffice?

You only need to fill the I-9 after you arrive in the US.
