Employment Status for H1 b petition

Hi All,

Does one have to be presently employed in order for an employer in US to apply for H1 petition ?.
Please note that I am currently in India and I am thinking of leaving my present job.
As such I want to know whether the visa officers in the embassy/officers who consider the H1 petition will ask question regarding my current employment status.
