H4 visa and passport validity

I currently have the H1B visa but would like to convert to H4 as soon as possible. My passport expires on October 4. That is, within 6 months. Can I go ahead start my H4 application now or should I renew my passport first ? Thank you for your response.

You can go ahead now, but most likely you would get I-94 only till passport expiry. H1 to H4 conversion sometimes can take a long time, so to be safe , if possible, try to get a new passport before going for the conversion.
