My employer just filed my H1b transfer. My start date was set for 6/2/14 but since the USCIS takes 2-3 weeks to send the receipt, I'll have to change my start date.
Will the receipt be enough to begin employment? How much time usually takes from the receipt reception to the approval notice?

It is not advisable to join the new employer based on just receipt number. If it gets deny I for any reason, then you will be in trouble.
