Old H1B reactivation?

I worked in the US on an H1B visa between 1995 and 1997 and then left to work elsewhere, for another company.

Question: Can a visa this old be 'rescued' and can I use the balance of the 6 years? I have my old passport with the visa stamp, and I know CBP has the old visa on file, because they've asked me about it when entering the US last year.
