  • volunteering for non-profit suggestions on visa (italian passport)

Hello and thank you all in the community for this forum.

I am exploring possibilities of getting a visa to stay in the US.
I have been volunteering for about 5 years for a non-profit which is based in the US and has foreign subsidiaries in various countries (including EU)
The organization would be happy to sponsor me for an H1B to be able to be here (they would benefit to have me volunteer closely with the management for the long term)
Because I never graduated it seems a bit more challenging to obtain this type of visa. From what I understand I would need to demonstrate at least 12 years work experience.
Which I do have (5 of those years volunteering for the non-profit in EU)

Would I be able to have the non-profit in EU write a reference letter for me? Or does it need to be a different employer?

Would it make sense to purse other types of visa since I wouldn't really want to work for them and receive a salary rather continue to volunteer for them contributing to their cause.
Perhaps considering a student type of visa? sign up for a school that can offer student visa. Would this help for future requests?

    Thank you for any advice!
