timeline required for requesting H1B extn

Hi,
I am currently in memphis, TN on H1B visa for last 5 years. In next 10 months I would complete 6 years on this H1B. No papers have been filed for GC yet. I am changing my employer in next 1-2 months who are confident that they can get my H1 extension after I join them.
Someone told me that atleast 12 months before H1B expires, we need to inititate GC process to get H1B extension (into 7th year). Is it true? Do we have a timeline?

Any response in this regard would be appreciated.

It is not possible to get h1b extension if u have 10 months left. there is a timeline to apply labor through perm, at least 365 days before your H1-b expires.
