H1b visa extension deadline

Hi,

I am on H1b visa. My visa is expiring on September. One of my friend told me that we have to initiate visa extension 45 days before it expires. So I have to initiate that by 15th August. Is it true? I tried to search it online but didn't get any reference.

It is advisable to file the extension at least 25 days in advance. Your extension documents should reach USCIS before your current I-94 expiry date. The receipt date on your H1B extension petition should be prior to your current I-94 expiry date. You are allowed to file the extension within 6 months from the I-94 expiry date. It is advisable to file it early because in case your petition gets denied, the time that you spent in U.S post your I-94 expiry date will be considered to be illegal stay.
