H1 B Visa and Indian passport - parallel extension and renewal

My H1B will expire in July 2016 and passport in Sep 2016. Please let me know if I can apply for a new passport while my visa extension is in progress? Or I have to get a renewed passport first to apply for a H1 B extension? Please suggest.

You can apply in parallel as they are two different process. Bu it is possible that you get your H1B extended only till your current passport expiry date if you submit the expiring passport information while filing the extension. So it is advisable to get the passport extended 1st and they file the H1B extension. It takes only 1 month to get the passport renewed in U.S.
