H1B visa status after entering using Advance Parole

I got my H1B visa in Oct 2015 valid till Oct 2018. I was using EAD and AP before that. I traveled twice to India and entered thru my H1B but during my last trip I was paroled into US. I was told that I am not in H1B status anymore. Does it mean my H1 visa is invalid and can't be used to renter US if I travel outside the country? Do I need to apply for AP to travel to India again? My wife is in India too. Can she travel back to US with her H4 visa as she doesn't have AP?
