Booking for VISA Stamping Appointment when H1 Extension is in progress

I am hoping that I will get a concrete answers for my question here.
My Current H1B Stamping is expiring in May-2017 and I have a scheduled travel to India in June-2017 for my marriage. I have applied for H1B extention with my Organization and due to more number of cases the Attorney is delaying to file the petition and expected it to be filed before end of April with Premium Processing.
I cannot postpone my travel and I have to book my appointment with US Consulate in India (Chennai) for stamping as my current stamping would have been expired by June 2017. My Attorney says that I can book the VISA appointment with US Consulate in India with my current i797 (which is going to expire in May 2017) as the appointment wait time is more in Chennai. And in the meantime, they can get the H1B Extension Status by May 2017.
My questions is, will it be possible to book appointment with the old i797 which is going to expire? will it cause any issues when appearing for stamping?
