Hi all,
Thank you all for posting your most useful stamping experience. I had my H1 stamping yesterday and thought will post for someone to benefit.
I am a F1-Opt-H1 case and work in CA, decided to goto Tijuana for my stamping. I applied for a mexican visa from the mexican consulate about 8-9 weeks before my stamping. I took help from an agent to get a DD from banamex though lot of you have suggested against it.
This agent took me to the mexican border, got my mexican visa stamped at entry and took me to the consulate for my appointment. I sat in the queue for about 3 hours, since for some reason there were very few visa officers that day. When my chance came, since i came on a F1, i was asked if i finished my studies, i said yes. Then i was asked to show my recent pay stub, job offer letter. She asked me where is my office located and then told me to come and collect my passport at 3.00 oclock. All in all it took about 2 mins only.
Some key points i think were, i had all the docs in order and whatever she asked i could give in quick time. I noticed the other office mentioning to one person to give only what is asked for, not everything that you have.
Once this was over, i came out at about 2.00 went and paid the $50 visa fee, went to a mexican restaurant next to the embassy and sat there till 3.00. Then my name was called at 3.00, handed the reciept for the $50 payment, and this agent came to pick me up.He took me back to the mexican office, where i had to return my FM3, a green booklet that they give for a visa, and he stamped on my visa sticker in my passport saying exit.
Following this, this guy drove over to the US side of the border and asked me to come there. I walked to the US office at the border, showed my new visa, and he asked me why did i come to Mexico, i told him to change my visa classification. He asked me where do i live, and asked me if i knew a few places close to my place of work. Further, he wanted to know if iam carrying anything from mexico to the US, I replied saying no. He gave me an orange slip, and told me to go to the office to collect my new I-94 by paying $6.
I then went to the office there, they took a snap, asked for my current address and gave me a new I-94. Then i walked to the parking and this agent dropped me back in San Diego.
I hope this helps someone. People may disagree, its better to spend a few extra dollars but have someone to take you around. You have one less thing to worry about. I met 2 more indians and they had come on their own. So its your call, but all the worry about staying over in mexico and all that is not void.
All the best, if anyone has anymore questions feel free to reply.
