Petition expiry and travel

Hi,

I have a H1B petition which expires on 16-Sep-2017 and I haven't traveled yet using, how early should I travel to US to extend it? Is there any rules like I have to stay in US for x number of days/months before the expiry date to extend it?

There is no such rule. Also, the extension is not automatic. You can also file another H1B (within the 6 yr. time frame) requesting cap exemption i.e., extension is not the only solution.
