H1 Cap Exempt Filing for older petition (>6 yrs)

Hello all,

I have a quick question regarding my H1b.

I have an H1b visa petition from my current employer with its start date as 10/1/2010 and it was stamped in Feb 2011. I never traveled on it.

I wanted to know if I can still renew it in cap-exempt manner without going through regular new H1b cap filing?
I am asking this because I read in online forums that cap-exempt renewal is possible only within 6 years of H1b petition start date (10/1/10).
