complete DS160 using old passport?

Hi,
My passport expires in feb 2019.I am planning to go to india in dec 2018 to get my visa stamping done.Can i complete for DS160 and take an appointment with the old passport and apply for a new passport here in US ?.or do i have to first renew my passport and then complete my DS160 with new passoport.Please help asap.

I think you should have at least 6 months validity on your passport to get stamping.

Yes .i understand that.and i will be applying for a passport renewal before i go to the stamping in chennai.But "will i be take an appointment using my old passport and take the new one too to the interview"?because i dont want to wait until i receive my new one and then to take an appointment.I also need to book travel tickets accordingly.
