Travel during H1 processing

Is it ok to travel on opt after H1 is approved. My question precisely is if my H1 is approved for oct 1st. Can I travel in september out of country on my opt and return to USA before my H1 commences. I Also does it really matter where the stamping is done? Is advantages to go to canada or mexico?

Any inputs would be appreciated.

my h4 visa valid until august 2006. i have the extension document valid upto 2007 october.some x company sponsored my h1b and it's under processing for this october. can i travel before august to india and come back on my current h4 visa?
