Urgent H1 extension/transfer

hi,
i have an h1 which is valid upto oct 1.
When should i apply for h1 extension.

I am also looking for a change of job.

Can i apply for an h1 transfer while my application for h1 extension is in process.

Change of Job on H1 Extension

Need some light from the experts here. Is H1 Extension as good as the intial H1 for 3 years in terms of changing jobs. I am currently on H1 extension and wish to switch jobs..is there any legal formality invoved apart from change of employer...thanks would really appreciate a response.
