Passport and H1 stamping

Hello

Could anybody please advise me if the passport has to be valid beyond 6 months of the expiry of the H1. Before one can go for stamping. My attorney instructions say so. Was curious to know if it is a rule.

Your passport needs to be valid for beyond 6 months as on the date of the visa interview.
