I can I check to see if I am an overstayer?

I am back in the UK now and I recently received my i-20 to attend school in the US but I overstayed my H1b visa by 6 months earlier this year.

Is there a way to check my status without flying half way across the world and being denied entrance?

Also, will this come up at my visa officer interview?

I went to US for 2 years on an F1 visa 1999-2001, and did not attend school. I never handed in an i-94 either. If after all that I was still granted an H1b in 2003

Have things changed that much recently?

I list my passport during my H1b stay but I was able to get a new one.

Does entering and leaving with a different passport/pp number effect anything?

Your over stay will be scrutinized before issuing visa at consulate, by luck if yur over saty is over looked and issued your visa you can safely travel.
