to convert H4 to work permit

I am an engineer by profession and my husband is in US and he is in H1B. I have applied for dependent visa of H1B and waiting for the appointment....I have a plan to join for phd in US in 2009 or 2010. I would like to know whether I can get permission to work in US by changing this H4 to anyother status..?Also, if I work for 1 year or so, is it possible for me to join for studies in 2009 or 2010....what is the procedure for doing the change of h4....Can I do anything now before leaving India.

H4 people cannot work. To work, you need work authorization. The option that I see is to get an H1 for yourself. L1 is also an option for qualifying candidates. Check immihelp for this.

How about your husband's Green Card process? At what stage is that at?

You can go back to school any time you want.
