  • SSN and H1B VISA name mismatch

    Hi All,

I am working in US on H1B Visa, I am from India. In my passport the surname field is left empty, and given name is DAVID STEEPHAN.

When I got my H1B Visa, it has Given name as FNU (field not used-i guess) and surname as DAVID STEEPHAN.

When I applied for my SSN I used first name as DAVID and Last name as STEEPHAN.

What should I do to get the discrepancies cleared?

Change the name in SSN to "FNU DAVID STEEPHAN" or change the name in VISA?

SSN office will enter your name as per the visa in the "Other names used" section of the application form. There is no need to correct it unless the DMV is causing problems issuing a DL for you.

Instead, you could get an observation recorded on your passport by the Indian consulate that clearly lists the FN: X LN: Y to avoid such problems.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.
