  • Visa and marraige.

    Hello,

I'm on H1B working in the US for last 2 years. My H1 is valid till March 2011.
My girlfriend is working on L1B visa that is valid till Nov 2010.

We are planning to get married in the US in next 6 months.

    1) Can we get married here ?

    2) What are the legal process that includes visa that we have to take care of ?

    3) We do not want any religious ceremonies. Just a mere civil marraige / court marrige is in our minds. Will this create any problems ?

    Thanks,
    Ranju

Yes, you can get married here through a civil ceremony. You can each continue with your own visas after marriage or Either of you could change status to your spouse's dependent visa depending on if either of you wants to stop working under his/her visa.

For example, your spouse could change from L1b to H-4(spouse of H-1) but that will take away her right to work under L1b unless she voluntarily wishes to quit work. Same thing applies for you changing status from H-1 to L2(spouse of L1)
