  • Got H1. SSN Question?

    Hi!

My H1b has been approved and I will move from H4 to H1 in October this year. When will I be eligible to apply for SSN? Do I need to wait till October of this year, get few pay slips and then apply for SSN? Please advice.

You don't need the pay stubs to apply for SSN.
Not a legal advice. Use of this information is strictly at your own risk.

You can apply on Oct 1st which is when you qualify to get a SSN. You need to get paid from Oct 1st to maintain your status.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.

I got SSN on the basis on having a job offer during my summer internship this summer. No paystubs.

How did you get SSN on a H4 status? Were you on F1 when you got the SSN? You retain the same SSN for your life now and no need to re-apply anything when you move to H1b. You need to be paid though on H1b, that is the law!
