  • Pls help *** Driver Licence issue

    Good day All,

I am going to arrive US in the end of Sep/09 under H1B status. However, my driver licence (D/L) which i got from my last trip to US under B2 status has already expired on Mar/09. The questions are:

    1. Can i apply to change another new D/L with DMV under my new status ? Shall i be required to attend any exam/test to get the new D/L ?

    2. In case of my wife who is issued the visa under H4 status and also got the D/L with expired date on Mar/09, will she be able to change the new D/L under the new status H4 ?

Many thanks for your comment and consultation.

Which state issued you a driving license? Are you going back to same state or a different one? In most states, if the license has expired more than 6 months, then you will have to retake the test. The rules for getting a driving license differ from state to state.

For example, In Washington the fee to renew a driver license is $25. If it is more than 60 days after your license expired, you will be charged an additional $10 late fee. The WA DMV manual does not specify at what point you need to take the retest. You should call the specific state's DMV help desk or google to find out the documents required. Both you and your wife should be able to get a new license. Be prepared to re-take the test if you are asked.

Thanks for your sharing, Shervin143. We got the D/Ls in California and will return back to stay in CA too. We have also tried to google as well as check out from DMV CA's website but unable to find any info. regarding our case.

If it is a CA driving license then you can renew it by paying the late fee, provided you have a clean driving record. You will need to talk to a customer service technician to find out if you need to re-take the test or not. You will have to provide your expired driving license number which they will run through their records to find out if you have any prior violations. Here is the number to reach a technician: 1-800-777-0133. The fee to renew a CA license is $26.

Much thanks for your advice. Luckily, we had a clean record during the passing time with no ticket/penalty.

          Really appreciate !
