Hi, we filed PERM in Jan. 2009 but haven't hear anything yet. Asked my lawyer he said that he can not even check with USCIS. Do every case have a receipt number? Does file PERM a year before 6-year H1B expiration help to extend the H1B? No answer for PERM but the H1B expires in Feb. Any advise?
    Thank you very much!

You are not the only one. Lately PERM is taking more time than before (Check the below URL). There are people who have applied in 2008 and still haven't heard anything back from DOL. There is no receipt number for PERM. Your lawyer would have received an email notification from DOL stating that they have recieved the documents. That is pretty much it for PERM. If you have filed PERM 365 days before your visa expiration, then you can apply for the 7th year extension.

Though, after filing PERM applications, the DOL issues a unique number for that candidate, which could be used by the employer or the attorney designated by the employer to check the status online that would say 'In process' or approved.

But checking the online status of the application is strictly with the employer or the attorney. Only they have access to that record using a unique username and password assigned exclusively for the employer.

      Hope it helps.
