Receipt Notice Delay from VSC

My 7th year extn was filed on 12/8/09. The attorney says she hasn't received the filing receipt (notice of action) yet. Is it normal to have 5-6 weeks delay just for the receipt? My H1B expries of 2/3/10 and she says we cant really do anything unless a receipt is available.
Hopefully people with similar experiences or knowledge will share some information

They will send a receipt immediately upon receiving the documents. It usually takes a week.

Thanks for your reply. So based on this its highly unusual that I dont have a receipt yet based on my timeline. Do you think it could be lost in the mail or something untoward like that. Can I call the USCIS myself to enquire?
