  • How do I calculate 6 year period on my H1B - issue date vs. expiration date

Hi everyone, this is my first post on the forums, so forgive me if I'm breaking any rules.

I wanted to calculate the end of my 6 year H1B period. So my first H1B was issued in Dec 2014. I got my visa renewed in 2017 and my current visa is set to expire in Jun 2020. I have been on H1B status during the entire time, I have gone to India few weeks a year. So my question is whether my end of 6 year period is Dec 2020 (based on my first H1B issue date) or Jun 2020 (based on the current H1B expiry date). If it's the former, can my company apply for H1B renewal for the remaining period (Dec 2020-Jun 2020 = 6 months)? What happens if I change jobs now? Can the new H1B visa have an expiry date beyond Jun 2020 (and before Dec 2020)?

    Thanks in advance!

Not 100% sure but this is my understanding based on my experience.

    - Expiration date should be whatever is stated on your I-797 and most recent Visa.
    - I think you can extend to get the additional months to get to 6 years if your company applies for it.
    - If you change jobs your H1B-transfer will max to Dec 2020.
    - You can't go beyond the 6 years. But if you get an approved I-140 the period can be extended 3 more years.
