Your Content Can USCIS issue H1B extension by calculating the unused time by default?

Does USCIS issues H1B extension by calculating the unused time (i.e. time spent outside of the USA within the first 6 years) by default? I was given H1B extension by USCIS considering unused time but still within the 6-year validity but my employer says USCIS might have mistakenly given the visa and I would have to apply for extension again seeking unused time. In short, the visa issued to me is valid till mid-2021 but my employer is asking me to file for extension again stating that It is unlikely that USCIS would have recaptured any of my time spent outside of the US without a specific request to do so. USCIS erroneously granted me H-1B approval notice beyond the max amount of time I was allowed to be in H-1B status. I have a valid h1b petition, stamped visa and a valid i-94 till mid-2021
