L1 to H4 Transfer

Hi,

My husband is working for company A and he is on L1 Visa. I am on H1 B working for the same company. He needs to quit right now. Is there a way he can transfer the L1 to H4 from the US without going back to India?

If yes, typically how long does the process take to transfer?

Also, can he quit right now and apply for a transfer in a day or two?

Can you share your experience.
I am currently in the same situation and may have to move to H4 any moment if my L1 extension is rejected.
Is there a risk of losing status if I file for my H4 on the day of my L1 rejection?
