H1 about to expire - didnt travel

Hello Mates,
I had my H1B stamped in oct 2008..but after dat, as everyone knows, recession hit the US and world. Due to the same i couldnt travel. Now I wish to travel on my H1B.
My query is : Till what time I can stay and work on this visa? Is it till the date for which my visa is valid? or the date which will be mentioned in I-94?

Generally what date they mention in I-94.
It is important to know, as if i cant stay for even two years, there is no point to go leaving decent enough job in india.
