University not allowing to volunteer on H-4

Hello,

I have heard that you can volunteer on H-4 in universities. One of the profs agreed to take me as a volunteer , but the HR came back sying I need to have employment authorization which is not possible on H4!!!

Is it true? Is there any way to go around this??

Hi,

Here are my views:

(1) Working on H4 on a Volunteer basis is kind of GREY area.....so you should consult an immigration attorney before u take up this job (as it should not create any problems for you in future)

(2) It is said that H4 can work as a Volunteer for a Non-Profit Organization only

(3) Job should be really "Volunteer" type i.e. Job will not considered Volunteer type where everybody is paid except you
For example you can't work as a developer for a software development company for free.You may call it volunteer work but it has to be truly volunteer work, meaning others also do this work/Job as volunteers. A classic example is volunteering for a church.
You can not volunteer if others get paid to do the same job.
