Duration of H1 Stay

Hi There,

If person has stayed for 3 years in L1 and his H1-B gets approved, how long he can say in H1. My understanding is ,he is already stayed for 3 year so he can stay for another 3 year (H1 validity is 6 so 6-3yr = 3 years) ..Pls correct me if i am wrong.
