my H1B extension petition got approved just today. however i am planning to fly to India next week but i don't have an updated i-797 with me. can i still travel? the h1b visa stamped on my passport is valid until March 2022. but my concern is more about the correct way of re-entry such that my i-94 doesn't get screwed up with wrong validity date if i dont have the updated i-797.

Until you go for visa stamping with the help of H1B Ext petition, your I-94 will not be extended. When you come back, it will be remain same with the previously approved visa. If you have a plan to go for visa stamping with the help of H1B Ext, just try. For visa stamping, you dont require original H1B Approval notice. With the help of copy of H1B Approval notice, you can move forward. But sometimes, at the port of entry, Officer may ask for Original approval notice.
Regarding H1B Ext approval notice, If you would have filed in premium, within one week you can expect. If that is normal processing, it may take another one or two weeks to receive.
