URGENT!!!: H1B cancellation/out of status question

Last month, My friend has recently moved from F1-H1B..His new employer had applied for his I-797 petition..He did not like the new job and decided to quit today..the employer informed him they will file for a cancellation on his I-797 petition and the cancellation should happen within a week...
Can any of the seniors please give suggestions regarding out of status issues and what are his best chances to get back in STATUS?

He must leave the US or apply for change of status to any other status like dependent or visitor or student.
