Was told that H4 don’t get social security cards no more

I went to the social security office in Chicago and was told by the agency they no longer issued social security for H4 no more.

Instead he gave me my social security number. Last week I went on a retail job interview and they refused me bc all I could provide was a social security number and not the card itself.

I do have an EAD though. I wonder if there is a way I can get a state ID or some sort so at least I have one valid US ID?
