  • Lost original SSN, and visa stamping in India

    Hi guys,
    please help.

I am on H1b and am going to India day after tomorrow.
I came to US on H4, 22 months back. And then I got my H1b while I was in US.

Now it has been 18 months since I am working on H1B in US.
I am visiting India, and I just now realized that I do not have my original SSN card.

I do have scanned copy of SSN and photocopies of the same.

Since I have to get my H1B visa stamped in India before returning back, I will be going for an interview at Delhi US Consulate.

I have all the other documents in Original.
Pay Stubs, Offer Letters, H1B approval notice, everything. Only my original SSN is missing.

    Will it be a problem?
    Should I cancel my trip.
The replacement SSN card takes 2-6 weeks to be reissued. I don't know what to do?

    Please help.

SSN card has nothing to do with your visa interview. You may want to contact the SSA office for the replacement.
Not a legal advice. Use of this information is strictly at your own risk.

      Thank you, Shervin

And thank God that it won't be required. At least it not one of the mandatory document.

I won't be returning to US for around 2 months.
Will it be alright if I come back and the apply for a replacement card?

Yes. But SSN is a very important document. If someone can get hold of it, it can be easily mis-used. It is better you bring this to the notice of SSA office soon. Also, check your credit history to make sure nothing weird is going on with your credit files.

          Thank you.
I'll get active on this right away. I'll call the SSA office and let them know. Its not far, so I can go and start the paper work also.

          Thank you once again.
          Your response has really helped.
